In the summer of 2021, Gizem traveled across Turkey, searching for interesting locations where she recorded sounds and collected local herbs and plants with the aim to create a multi-sensory experience of sound, image and scent. Gizem used field recordings from Marmaris, Antalya, and İğneada which she elaborated into soundscapes. These soundscapes evoke a meditative state in which the specific location is presented by the scent of herbs and plants. The design of the scents is created from the plants in the regions, which, together with the soundscape, and the visuals of microscopic images of plants awaken in listeners a felt sense of being there.
About Mārga
Mārga is a music label and platform based in Amsterdam. Mārga is a Sanskrit term and refers to a significant pattern marked in the world. As a label and platform Mārga curates music and sound that open all our senses to the touch of music and sound. Mārga produces collaborations with artists who are inspired by the inventive and creative force of deep listening whether it be dance, art, ritual, or meditative engagements. Mārga is founded and curated by an electronic music composer and producer Gizem Öz.
Gizem Öz
Gizem is an electronic music composer and producer based in Amsterdam. Gizem’s work is inspired by our sensory being in the world; the feelings and emotions that are evoked by listening, smelling, seeing, touching and tasting. In her installations and performances, Gizem seeks to create the sensory conditions that open up our senses for new experiences, emotions and aesthetic sensations. She creates soundscapes, installations, music for dance and deep listening by using processed field recordings, acoustic and electronic instruments. Gizem’s works speak of going on a journey of the soul.
